Science in the Comet room: Butterflies

The children in the Comet room have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. We’re reading the book ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and exploring how the caterpillar in the story eats lots of different foods, before pupating and emerging as a beautiful butterfly. We have used the story to encourage the children to try a wide variety of foods, by tasting everything the caterpillar eats in the story. We have also been watching our live caterpillars growing and eating the food we provided them, and this week the children were fascinated to see the caterpillars starting to create cocoons hanging from the lid of our caterpillar house. We’re very excited to see them all turn into chrysalis and the children are wondering what colours the butterflies that emerge will be!
